My name is Derek Schauland. I blog for fun and to get information about interesting products and services out there for others to read about.

Sure there are others who blog more often than I do, and that is ok. I started this blog to look at technologies that I use which maybe the average consumer has not yet heard of and maybe open their eyes to new things. I realize that not everyone for whom this blog was started will read everything here or understand it, but it is a starting point.

I am currently working as a network administrator, managing a 50 (or so) user environment with 13 servers. I also freelance for an Information Technology site published by CNet NetworksTechrepublic.com. I have been publishing content at Techrepublic since 2002 and love every minute of it.

In July of 2008 I was awarded the Microsoft MVP award for File System Storage. This award is given to technology professionals who provide outstanding support and content in the technical community.

When Microsoft launched the IT Manager hub at TechNet, they asked if I would participate and blog for the site. The items posted here are also syndicated here. The Published Articles page on this site refers to content purchased by other organizations for publication. Content on the published articles pages is the property of the site which has published it but was produced by me.

Hopefully the opportunity to create content that is interesting to my readers will continue. As always, comments are welcomed and appreciated. It is a great feeling to receive feedback about something that you have written and even better if it can help you improve and grow.

I read your article on Outlook archiving in the October 2011 Redmond Magazine. I’ve used the manual archiving to PST files for years in order to structure my folders into some manner that allows me to quickly drill-down to what I’m looking for.

The problem I’ve had, which no one has been technically savvy enough to discuss or resolve, is when I go back to those folders and NOTHING is in them. There are a LOT of these folders in my world and it’s a great loss to me. The PST files are local to my hard drive as saving them in Outlook would run over my capacity limit.

I would dearly love to find someone with the right technical accumen to assist or coach me in determining why this happens and how to stop it. The content of your Redmond Magazine article gave me hope that you (or someone you know) would have that level of knowledge and I might end up folders whose content does not vanish.

    Kind regards,

      Hi Mike -

So you are having trouble with folders contained in a PST that are empty? But the folders in your inbox have mail in them and should be archiving?

What do your archival settings look like? Or are you manually archiving them via drag n drop? If you can provide a little more information about what is happening and what you expect to happen, I will do my best to help you figure it out.
